Aquaculture practices in FoodLAND, a good example for Liberia to follow
On 3 July 2024, AquaBioTech Group in collaboration with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) hosted an Aquaculture Development Day Workshop in Monrovia, Liberia. Bringing together national and international stakeholders, the workshop highlighted current issues and limitations in the Liberian aquaculture sector and using positive examples from projects such as FoodLAND the future of successful interventions in Liberia was discussed. The large number of passionate and driven local stakeholders present at the workshop showed the potential of the Liberian aquaculture industry.
The research of the Aquaculture Working Group of the FoodLAND project is focusing on:
- intensive and extensive fish production,
- Irrigation of crops with effluent water from the fish tanks/ponds and other forms of Integrated Aqua-Agriculture (IAA)
- The use of local ingredients for feed production
- Feed production with a low cost
- Shorter Distribution Chains.
Any outcomes from the research will be, hopefully, used to:
- improve the circular economy models
- increase production efficiency
- reduce the environmental footprint
- reduce nutritional deficiencies
- help knowledge transfer.
