Experiencing hydroponic cultivation at a school in Fernena, Tunisia
The Tunisian partners of FoodLAND have performed a scientific experience centred on a simplified hydroponic cultivation system in the school Chaiiba of Fernena. The experiment was carried out by UNIBO with the collaboration of CEFA Tunisie.
The experimental activities carried out in the school have made it possible to identify an alternative substrate for the growth of plants, recycling the straw from the production of cereals to be used in hydroponic systems. Those systems are extremely valuable, because they also increase the efficiency of water use, as demonstrated in the past years by different researchers
The results of this experience and the system put in place will be used both for the purpose of educational training for the students and to train farmers included in the Food Hub on a new agricultural technology, which will allow them to save up to 90% of water in vegetable production.
